Sealy Mattress Comparison: Soft, Medium or Firm – Which Is Right for You?

Soft, medium and firm mattresses compared in a modern mattress showroom

Choosing a new mattress gets much easier once you know how you want it to feel.

Some sleepers love the cushioned, sink-in comfort of a soft mattress. Others prefer the balanced feel of a medium mattress. And some simply sleep better on a firmer, more supportive-feeling surface.

But even after you’ve decided on firmness, there can still be several Sealy mattresses to choose from.

What’s the difference between an value-focused Sealy Posturepedic and one of the more premium models? When does it make sense to move from a traditional spring mattress to a hybrid? And what are you actually getting for the additional cost?

In this guide, we’re comparing nine Sealy mattresses available from The Sleep Center, divided into three comfort categories:

  • Soft: Orlando Spring Soft EPT, Plainfield Hybrid Soft and Brenham II Spring Soft EPT
  • Medium: Orlando Spring Medium, Reno II Spring Medium and High Point II Hybrid Medium
  • Firm: Plainfield Spring Firm EPT, Reno II Hybrid Firm and High Point II Hybrid Firm

Rather than looking for one “best” Sealy mattress, the goal is to help you find the one that best matches your preferred feel, features and budget.

A quick note about mattress firmness: Soft, medium and firm are descriptions of feel, not measures of mattress quality. Your body weight, sleeping position and personal preferences can also affect how firm a mattress feels to you. Whenever possible, trying a mattress in person is one of the best ways to decide.

Best Sealy Soft Mattresses

A soft mattress generally provides more cushioning and contouring around the body than a medium or firm model.

People who enjoy a plush sleeping surface, including many side sleepers, often gravitate toward softer mattresses because of the additional cushioning around areas such as the shoulders and hips. That doesn’t mean every side sleeper needs a soft mattress, however. Body weight and personal preference play an important part.

Some shoppers also associate softness with pillow top and Euro top mattresses, although the construction and firmness of the complete mattress matter more than the top style alone.

The three Sealy soft mattresses below give you three quite different ways to get that softer feel.

Sealy Posturepedic Orlando Spring Soft EPT

A straightforward way to get a softer Sealy feel

The Orlando Spring Soft EPT is where we’d start for someone who knows they prefer a softer mattress but doesn’t necessarily need all of the upgraded materials found in Sealy’s more expensive collections.

It uses Sealy’s PrecisionFit Coils to provide targeted support, along with a MoistureProtect Cover designed to wick moisture away from the body. Reinforcement around the perimeter creates a more stable edge for sitting and sleeping.

The biggest reason to choose the Orlando isn’t that it has the longest feature list. It’s that it gives you the familiar support of a traditional spring mattress combined with a softer comfort level at a more accessible point in the Sealy range.

Why choose it?

  • You prefer a softer sleeping surface.
  • You like the feel of a traditional spring mattress.
  • You don’t need a premium hybrid construction.
  • You’re looking for a more budget-conscious Sealy option.

Consider stepping up if: you want more conforming foam, better motion isolation or more advanced comfort and cooling materials.

Sealy Posturepedic Plainfield Hybrid Soft

A soft mattress with the benefits of hybrid construction

The Plainfield Hybrid Soft is an interesting step up because you’re not simply paying for a more expensive version of the same mattress.

You’re changing the construction.

The Plainfield combines individually encased PrecisionFit Coils with Sealy memory foam layers, giving the mattress the responsiveness and support of coils together with the more conforming feel associated with foam.

Because the coils are individually encased, they’re also designed to reduce motion transfer. That’s a feature couples may appreciate when one person tends to move around during the night.

The Plainfield also adds Sealy’s DuraFlex Coil Edge, which reinforces the perimeter and is designed to remain flexible when the mattress is used with an adjustable base.

Why choose it?

  • You want a soft mattress but prefer a hybrid over a traditional spring model.
  • You like more body-conforming comfort.
  • Motion transfer between sleep partners is a consideration.
  • You plan to pair your mattress with an adjustable base.

Compared with the Orlando: the Plainfield’s biggest advantage is its hybrid construction. You’re getting memory foam layered over encased coils rather than simply moving to another soft spring mattress.

Sealy Posturepedic Elite Brenham II Spring Soft EPT

The premium soft option in our comparison

The Brenham II Spring Soft EPT stays with a spring construction but introduces several features from Sealy’s higher-end Posturepedic Elite range.

Its Posturepedic Pro Support System combines PrecisionFit Coil technology with MaxSupport Technology for additional targeted support.

Above that support system, ComfortSense Gel Memory Foam is designed to adapt to the body and distribute weight across the mattress. The cover incorporates SealyChill Technology for a cool-to-the-touch feel, and the mattress uses Sealy’s reinforced DuraFlex Coil Edge.

This makes the Brenham an attractive option for someone who loves a plush mattress but doesn’t want “soft” to mean sacrificing more sophisticated support, cooling and comfort materials.

Why choose it?

  • You want a more premium soft mattress.
  • Pressure-relieving comfort is a priority.
  • You want upgraded cooling materials.
  • You prefer a traditional spring construction with premium comfort layers.
  • You’re willing to spend more for additional support and comfort technology.

Our soft-mattress takeaway

Choose the Orlando if value and a softer spring feel are your priorities.

Choose the Plainfield Hybrid Soft if you want to move into hybrid construction without jumping to the top of the Sealy range.

Choose the Brenham II Soft if you’re looking for a premium soft mattress with upgraded cooling, conforming comfort and targeted support.

Best Sealy Medium Mattresses

Medium mattresses occupy the middle ground between deeply cushioned soft mattresses and firmer sleeping surfaces.

That makes them popular with shoppers who don’t want to feel as though they’re sinking deeply into their mattress but also don’t enjoy an especially firm surface.

A medium mattress can also be worth trying when two people share a bed but have somewhat different comfort preferences.

Sealy Posturepedic Orlando Spring Medium

A simple, balanced Sealy mattress

The Orlando Spring Medium offers many of the foundational technologies found across Sealy’s current Posturepedic lineup without adding a long list of premium features.

Its PrecisionFit Coils are designed to adapt to the body and help maintain alignment, while the MoistureProtect Cover helps manage moisture during the night. A reinforced Coil Edge helps create a more stable surface around the perimeter.

For someone who lies down on a very soft mattress and thinks “too plush,” but does the same on a firm mattress and thinks “too hard,” this is the category we’d suggest exploring first.

Why choose it?

  • You want a balanced medium feel.
  • You prefer traditional spring construction.
  • You want a Sealy without paying for features you may not need.
  • Value is more important than premium materials.

Sealy Posturepedic Reno II Spring Medium

A worthwhile step up without going all the way to a premium hybrid

The Reno II is where the differences between Sealy’s tiers become more noticeable.

Like the Orlando, it’s a spring mattress, but its Posturepedic Pro Support System adds MaxSupport Technology to its PrecisionFit Coils.

The coils are individually encased, which helps reduce motion transfer, while the Cool-to-the-Touch Cover with MoistureProtect upgrades the cooling experience.

Around the perimeter, the Reno uses Sealy’s DuraFlex Coil Edge, providing a durable seating and sleeping surface while remaining suitable for pairing with an adjustable base.

For many shoppers, this could be the sweet spot in the medium category: noticeably more technology than the entry model without making the leap into Sealy’s premium hybrid range.

Why choose it?

  • You want upgraded support while retaining spring construction.
  • You share the mattress and want reduced motion transfer.
  • Cooling is important to you.
  • You want stronger edge support.
  • You’re looking for a middle ground between basic and premium.

Sealy Posturepedic Elite High Point II Hybrid Medium

The feature-rich medium option

The High Point II Hybrid Medium takes a substantially different approach.

It’s a premium hybrid, combining individually encased coils with Sealy memory foam. It also incorporates the PrecisionFit Coil and MaxSupport technologies found in the Posturepedic Pro support system.

For comfort, the High Point II uses ComfortSense Gel Memory Foam, which conforms to the body and helps distribute weight across the mattress.

It also adds Advanced SealyChill Technology for a cool-to-the-touch sleeping surface and a DuraFlex Coil Edge around the perimeter.

If you know you like a medium mattress but want more conforming comfort and a more feature-rich design, the High Point II is the obvious premium candidate.

Why choose it?

  • You want a premium hybrid mattress.
  • You prefer a balanced medium feel.
  • You like the conforming sensation of memory foam.
  • Cooling and motion isolation matter to you.
  • You’re looking for a mattress with Sealy’s more advanced comfort and support technologies.

Our medium-mattress takeaway

Choose the Orlando Medium for straightforward comfort and value.

Choose the Reno II Medium if you’d rather spend extra on upgraded support, motion isolation, cooling and edge construction without paying for a premium hybrid.

Choose the High Point II Hybrid Medium if you want the most complete comfort package of the three.

Best Sealy Firm Mattresses

A firm mattress provides less sink and a more substantial sleeping surface.

Some people simply prefer that sensation. Back and stomach sleepers often explore firmer mattresses, although sleeping position alone shouldn’t determine which firmness you buy. Body weight and personal comfort preferences can make two people experience the same mattress very differently.

Sealy’s firm options also demonstrate something important: a firm mattress doesn’t have to be a basic mattress.

You can choose anything from a relatively straightforward spring model to a premium hybrid while retaining a firmer overall feel.

Sealy Posturepedic Plainfield Spring Firm EPT

Firm comfort without moving into premium territory

The Plainfield Spring Firm EPT combines a firmer feel with Sealy’s Posturepedic Plus support system.

It includes PrecisionFit Coils, individually encased coils to help limit motion transfer, a MoistureProtect Cover and Sealy’s reinforced DuraFlex Coil Edge.

That makes it a sensible starting point for someone who already knows they prefer a firm mattress and doesn’t feel the need to pay for memory foam layers or Sealy’s more advanced cooling technology.

Why choose it?

  • You prefer a distinctly firm sleeping surface.
  • You want spring rather than hybrid construction.
  • You share a bed and want encased coils that help reduce motion transfer.
  • You want reinforced edge support.
  • You’re trying to keep the budget below Sealy’s premium models.

Sealy Posturepedic Reno II Hybrid Firm

Firm support with hybrid comfort

The Reno II Hybrid Firm provides a nice demonstration of why “firm” and “hard” shouldn’t necessarily be treated as the same thing.

The mattress still has a firm overall feel, but its hybrid construction combines encased PrecisionFit Coils with Sealy memory foam.

Sealy’s MaxSupport Technology enhances the support system, while the individually encased coils are designed to reduce motion transfer.

The Reno II also has a Cool-to-the-Touch Cover with MoistureProtect and the reinforced DuraFlex Coil Edge.

It’s a strong choice for someone who wants the support and less-sinky sensation of a firm mattress while still enjoying the contouring comfort of foam.

Why choose it?

  • You want a firm mattress but prefer hybrid construction.
  • You like some memory-foam contouring without choosing a soft mattress.
  • Motion transfer is important.
  • You want upgraded targeted support and cooling.
  • You’re looking for a strong mid-tier firm option.

Sealy Posturepedic Elite High Point II Hybrid Firm

Premium features with a firmer feel

At the premium end, the High Point II Hybrid Firm shares much of the sophisticated construction found in its Medium counterpart while maintaining a firmer overall comfort level.

Its Posturepedic Pro Support System uses PrecisionFit Coil and MaxSupport technologies, while ComfortSense Gel Memory Foam provides conforming pressure relief above the coil system.

You also get Advanced SealyChill Technology, individually encased coils to reduce motion transfer, hybrid construction and a DuraFlex Coil Edge.

This is the mattress to consider when you know you prefer a firm sleeping surface but don’t want firmness to mean giving up premium comfort materials.

Why choose it?

  • You want a premium firm mattress.
  • You prefer hybrid construction.
  • You want conforming memory foam with a firmer overall feel.
  • Cooling technology is high on your priority list.
  • You want Sealy’s more advanced support and comfort features.

Our firm-mattress takeaway

Choose the Plainfield Spring Firm EPT if you want a straightforward firm Sealy with solid core features.

Choose the Reno II Hybrid Firm if you want the firmer feel combined with the comfort and motion-isolating benefits of hybrid construction.

Choose the High Point II Hybrid Firm if you want premium Sealy materials and technology while retaining a firm sleeping surface.

Spring vs Hybrid: Does It Matter?

Once you’ve chosen a firmness level, construction may be the next biggest decision.

A traditional spring mattress uses a coil support system with cushioning materials above it. If you’ve slept comfortably on innerspring mattresses for years, there’s no rule saying you need to switch.

Hybrid mattresses combine coils with more substantial foam comfort layers.

That can make a hybrid worth considering when you want:

  • More contouring around the body
  • Pressure-relieving foam comfort
  • Reduced transfer of movement between partners
  • The responsiveness of coils rather than an all-foam feel

The important thing is that hybrid doesn’t automatically mean softer.

The Plainfield Hybrid Soft and High Point II Hybrid Firm are both hybrids, yet they’re intended to provide very different comfort experiences.

Construction and firmness are two separate decisions.

If you’re also considering an adjustable bed, see our guide to choosing a mattress for an adjustable base.

Is a More Expensive Sealy Mattress Always Better?

Not necessarily.

Moving up the Sealy range generally buys you additional materials and technology, but those features only represent better value if they matter to you.

For example, moving from an Orlando model into the Reno II range introduces features such as MaxSupport Technology, individually encased coils and upgraded cooling and edge construction. Moving farther into the Elite models can add ComfortSense Gel Memory Foam and SealyChill Technology.

Those are meaningful upgrades.

But if you try the Orlando and genuinely find it extremely comfortable, buying a more expensive mattress simply because it’s more expensive doesn’t guarantee you’ll sleep better on it.

The right mattress is the one that combines the comfort you prefer with the features you’ll actually value at a price that makes sense for you.

How to Choose Your Sealy Mattress

If you’re comparing several mattresses in a showroom, don’t begin by studying the specifications.

Start by lying on them.

1. Decide which firmness feels natural

Try a soft, medium and firm mattress without worrying too much about the price at first.

You’ll often eliminate an entire category surprisingly quickly.

Your sleeping position can influence your mattress preference, and it also affects the type of pillow that’s best suited to the way you sleep.

2. Spend more than a few seconds on each mattress

A mattress can feel comfortable when you first sit down or lie back on it.

Give yourself enough time to settle into your normal sleeping position and notice how your shoulders, hips and back feel.

3. Compare mattresses within your preferred firmness

Once you’ve narrowed it down to soft, medium or firm, then compare the features.

Ask yourself whether you value:

  • Traditional spring or hybrid construction
  • Memory foam comfort
  • Reduced motion transfer
  • Upgraded cooling materials
  • Reinforced edge support
  • Compatibility with an adjustable base

4. If you share a bed, shop together

Your partner’s preferences matter too.

A medium mattress may sometimes provide a workable middle ground, but that’s not a universal rule. Both people should try the mattress whenever possible.

5. Don’t choose based on the label alone

One manufacturer’s “medium” may not feel exactly like another’s. Even two mattresses from the same brand can feel different because of their construction and comfort layers.

The label helps narrow down your choices. Your body makes the final decision.

So, Which Sealy Mattress Should You Choose?

There’s no single Sealy mattress we’d recommend to everybody.

Instead, we’d narrow the decision down like this:

If you prefer soft mattresses

Start with the Orlando Spring Soft EPT for value, move to the Plainfield Hybrid Soft if you want hybrid construction, or consider the Brenham II Spring Soft EPT for more premium comfort and cooling features.

If you prefer medium mattresses

The Orlando Spring Medium provides a straightforward balanced option. The Reno II Spring Medium offers an appealing step up in support and cooling, while the High Point II Hybrid Medium is the premium choice for shoppers wanting hybrid construction and more conforming comfort.

If you prefer firm mattresses

The Plainfield Spring Firm EPT is a strong place to start. The Reno II Hybrid Firm adds memory foam and upgraded support within a hybrid design, while the High Point II Hybrid Firm brings Sealy’s premium comfort and cooling technologies to a firmer mattress.

Most importantly, don’t assume that the softest, firmest or most expensive mattress must be the right one.

The best mattress is the one you look forward to sleeping on.
